NETWORK HARDWARE

The Network card , also called NIC ,is one of the most important component that helps your computer to ger connected to a local area network.


choosing your network card: PCI based  cards have 32 bit data transfer rate while ISA based cards have 16 bit data transfer rate.this makes PCI based NICs much faster tp data transmission.


speed of transmission: network cards begin at transmission speed of 10mbps and today they can carry up to 1000 mbps of data.


configure a Network card: 



  1. switch off your computer and pull pout the power cord
  2. remove the cover of the CPU of your computer 
  3. find a vacant slot where you can plug in your card.
  4. remove the metal slot protector from the computer cabinet and insert the card into the slot .
  5. fix the card using screw and close the computer 
  6. switch on the computer 
  7. if you are using windows 95/98/me/2000, a window indicated that the OS has detected new hardware .it now prompts you to insert the drive diskette for the driver files
  8. when the OS gets the needed driver file,restart your pc
  9. now plug-in cable,then configure any additional protocols.protocols are the rules of communication with each other.
